What is Massage Therapy?

The use of massage therapy for healing purposes dates back 4,000 years in Chinese medical literature and continues to be an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  Today, massage is a rapidly growing profession and consumers visit massage therapists 230 million times each year.

Massage is a “hands-on” treatment in which a therapist manipulates muscles and other soft tissues of the body to improve health and well-being.  It has been practiced as a healing therapy for centuries in nearly every culture around the world.

The Benefits

What exactly are the benefits of receiving bodywork?

Useful for all of the conditions listed below and more, massage can:

  • Relieve muscle tension
  • Reduce stress
  • Induce feelings of calmness
  • Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow-the body’s natural defense system
  • Increase joint flexibility
  • Lessen depression and anxiety
  • Reduce post-surgery adhesions and swelling
  • Ease medication dependence
  • Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts
  • Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller

Recent research also shows that bodywork improved pain symptoms and allowed patients to function better than those who didn’t get massage.
